Shalom, Kol Ami!
My favorite holiday is almost here—Tu BiShvat, the "Birthday of the Trees!" This celebration has grown to hold a special place in my heart, though it wasn’t always my favorite. About 20 years ago, I led my first Tu BiShvat Seder and was captivated by its symbolism and the chance to taste new fruits and nuts. Since then, my love for this holiday has only deepened.
Tu BiShvat reminds us of our Jewish responsibility for Tikkun Olam, repairing the world. After last month’s devastating fires in California, the importance of caring for our planet feels even more urgent. We only have one Earth, and it’s up to us to protect and nurture its beauty.
This month, our Religious School will hold a special Tu BiShvat Seder on Wednesday, February 12th. Sharing this holiday with our students is always a highlight for me. I love introducing them to new foods and exploring the holiday’s deeper messages. Each year, I add something fresh and unique for the children to try, making it a truly memorable experience. Kol Yeladim Update
January may have been a short month due to Winter Break and a few days off, but our teachers made the most of the time we had! They worked hard to instill a joy for Jewish learning, focusing on prayer and traditions. Our youngest participants in the Shalom Yeladim (newborn-to-toddler) Program had a delightful session about Shabbat, featuring a visit from Todah the Shabbat Sloth and a special lesson from Rabbi Blatt.
Looking ahead, our next Shalom Yeladim Program is on February 9th, when Rabbi Chaya and Mrs. Shaina will lead an engaging session about Tu BiShvat. We can't wait to welcome your little ones for another fun and meaningful morning!
February Highlights
February is packed with opportunities to connect and celebrate:
- Member Appreciation Shabbat – Join us on Friday, February 7th, as we honor the newest members of our Kol Yeladim family. The evening will begin with a Holy Happy Hour, followed by services and a delicious dinner.
- World Wide Wrap – On February 9th, our Brotherhood will lead this inspiring program on the mitzvah of Tefillin. Congregant Craig Kalter will guide our 4th–7th graders as they lay Tefillin during Minyan.
- Beginyan – On February 22nd, Ms. Alissa will lead this fun and educational morning for 2nd–5th graders, culminating in a community luncheon sponsored by the Howard & Elizabeth Kanter Fund.
- Pizza & PJ Shabbat – Wrap up the month with us on Friday, February 28th, for a family-friendly Shabbat featuring songs, dancing, prayers, and, of course, pizza! This event is perfect for families with children up to age 8.
With so much happening, I’m excited to share these moments with our Kol Ami Kehillah. Let’s come together to celebrate, learn, and grow as a community.
B’Shalom,
Jennifer West
