The holiday of Purim celebrates the Jewish heroine: Esther, the Beautiful; Esther, the Brave; Esther, the Strong. It is a story 23 centuries old, of feasting and fasting, of good triumphing over evil, with the wise Mordechai orchestrating the survival, once more, of the Jews, by outwitting the evil Haman. This pattern of near extermination and survival, good and evil, is present throughout our history, for evil Hamans are overcome only temporarily.
We are Esther’s descendants. We must find the courage and strength, like Esther, to come forward, to speak out against injustice and inequities and to remember our history. This story remains relevant today. The retelling enables us to prepare the next generation. Like Mordechai, we must care that the Jewish spirit will continue. We will not let Amelek and his descendants, the Hamans of the world, succeed. The traditions of Purim can motivate us. Let our sorrows turn to gladness, and let us celebrate the miracles together at our Annual Purim Carnival on March 9th.
The Purim Carnival is a wonderful way to celebrate this holiday on March 9th and then later that afternoon, join with Sisterhood at our Game Day starting at 2 PM. Bring any game you like or use one of our table games. This is an opportunity to join with Sisterhood for a fun afternoon!
The Florida Region of Women’s League for Conservative Judaism will be holding a Shabbaton the weekend of February 28-March 2. The attendees will be joining Kol Ami for Shabbat morning services and will be sponsoring the kiddush luncheon afterwards. Please join us and welcome all the women from across the state of Florida.
B’Shalom,
Sharon Cross
